WiLDAF TANZANIA AND GIZ CONDUCT SPECIAL MEDIA TRAINING CAMP AHEAD OF THE 16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM AGAINST GENDER-BASED VIOLENCE CAMPAIGN

Dar es Salaam, October 9, 2025.

The Women in Law and Development in Africa (WiLDAF Tanzania), in collaboration with GIZ, has conducted a three-day Special Media Training Camp for journalists, as part of the preparations for the 2025 16 Days of Activism Against Gender-Based Violence Campaign. The training also supports national efforts through the National Dialogue on Digital Violence and Violence Against Women in Elections.

The camp aimed to equip journalists and communication professionals with a deeper understanding of key issues related to: Public Relations, communication ethics, and journalistic integrity, Digital safety for journalists and human rights defenders and Gender-sensitive storytelling and human rights–based content creation, with a focus on combating gender-based violence and raising awareness of digital violence and violence against women in elections.

Through this training, participants are expected to gain practical skills on how to report cases of gender-based violence professionally, ethically, and responsibly while using technology safely and for the benefit of society.

Speaking during the opening session, the Executive Director of WiLDAF Tanzania, Anna Kulaya noted that the initiative is part of ongoing efforts to build a network of journalists who drive social change through reporting that upholds dignity, rights, and gender equality.

“We want to see journalists taking the lead in amplifying the voices of women and girls, standing against all forms of violence, and using technology in a safe and positive way,” Adv. Anna Kulaya said.

On his part, the GIZ representative emphasized the importance of partnering with the media in addressing technology-fueled violence, particularly that which targets women in politics and elections.

“Ensuring that women’s voices are heard without fear is fundamental to democracy. Through this training, we are building a generation of journalists who champion justice, equality, and social accountability,” he added.

The training camp is also part of the preparations to support the upcoming National Dialogue on Technology-Related Violence and Violence Against Women in Elections, which will bring together stakeholders from government, civil society, media, and development partners to discuss joint strategies for ending gender-based violence both online and offline.

WiLDAF Tanzania and GIZ reaffirmed their commitment to continue investing in education, awareness, and innovative communication approaches to foster a society that values gender equality and respect for human rights.
